Francesco Sette (ESRF-DG) awarded Doctor Honoris Causa by the National Research Centre Kurchatov Institute

During the common Russia-ESRF scientific meeting held at the National Research Centre Kurchatov Institute (NRC-KI) in Moscow, Francesco Sette (ESRF-DG) was awarded Doctor Honoris Causa by Professor Mikhail Kovalchuk, Director of the NRC-KI, for his contribution to the development of synchrotron radiation experimental techniques and for his active role in strengthening the cooperation between Russian and European research infrastructures.
“This is a great honour, said Francesco Sette. Pushing the frontiers of knowledge to understand better, improve life, increase the competitiveness of our industry to create jobs, make a dream become reality, constitutes the mandate of all scientists in the world. Following a rich and lasting story of collaboration, we have developed together, ESRF and the Russian Federation, this dream to create new opportunities and cooperation for the future of Science, for Russian and European scientists, for the young generation.”

300 representatives of Russian universities and research centres attended this key meeting which was held on 2-3 July 2015 at the National Research Centre Kurchatov Institute in Moscow. The ESRF was represented by a delegation of 15 scientists, half of them Russian. Following the accession of the Russian Federation as a new ESRF Member, this meeting was held with the aim of strengthening and fostering the scientific cooperation and exchange among the respective communities.
This fruitful exchange paves the way to an even stronger collaboration, with the shared ambition of developing multilateral scientific programmes between universities and research centres for the complementary use of the ESRF and NRC-KI synchrotrons but also to develop common student programmes.
