Three Russian higher educational establishments have been included in the one hundred best universities in the world according to the THE: World Reputation Ranking 2016.

The Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT), a participant in the program for the advancement of competitiveness of Russian educational establishments, joined the Moscow State University and the Saint Petersburg State University, which secured places in the ranking’s Top 100 last year.

This year, Moscow State University took 30th place, Saint Petersburg State University is in the group of universities ranking from 81 to 90, and the MIPT is in the 91-100 group.

Phil Baty, chief editor of the THE Rankings, commented on the results of the Russian higher educational establishments as follows: “As we said when we published the previous ranking, Russia will have to continue working zealously in order to sustain its competitiveness among global players such as China, which is also investing in higher education. On the whole, the presence of the third Russian representative in the Ranking – MIPT – is excellent news. Last year, only two Russian universities were in the Ranking, and before that there had been only one for many years.

“Reputation is the world currency of higher education. It may be subjective and not always just, but it is very important. The TOP 100 most prestigious universities are a small elite group including only one half of one percent of the total number of world universities,” Phil Baty added.

The Times Higher Education World Reputation Ranking is complied on the basis of a large-scale survey of the academic community. The basis of the survey is evaluation of the teaching quality and academic activities of higher educational establishments.

This year, the survey took place from January till March, and more than 10,000 opinions of scientists from 133 countries were recorded.
